How to Write Your Own Fairy Tale
Instructions
- Step 1
Start with a fantasy character.
Pick a character for your story that has the traits of someone in your life. Do you know a dragon? How about that mean secretary at work? Her words come at you like fire every morning, don’t they? Think about the colors of your fantasy creature as representative of the emotions that you feel. Green for jealousy. Red for rage and anger. Purple for calm. Black for evil. Yellow for kindness and warmth. For example, I think the main character of my fairy tale is a red (angry) mermaid (female) with green (jealous) eyes. Just like an old girlfriend of mine.
- Step 2
Pick a gender for your character.
Make it male or female. It doesn’t matter, but each sex has its own set of mannerisms and attributes. Do you want a strong, bold character like a flame breathing dragon? How about a smooth and seductive swimmer, like a mermaid? It’s up to you.
- Step 3
Focus some effort on secondary characters.
Spice it up with a few added villains, or just give your main character a sidekick. Add a nemesis that needs to be battled. Add a princess that needs to be saved.
- Step 4
Give your fairy tale a setting.
Pick a setting that is appropriate for your character. Dragons live in caves. Mermaids live in the sea. Elves live at the North Pole . Fairies live in the forest. Describe your setting in detail. Make it come alive with colors, sounds and feeling.
- Step 5
Give your fairy tale meaning.
It’s really neat to be able to tell a story and also convey some basic truth about life, or share an experience that you have had in your life. Carefully intertwine the characters. Make their paths cross. They should interact. Good, bad, or ugly, it doesn’t matter to the listener.
- Step 6
Practice your fairy tale.
Spend the time to practice and perfect your fantasy tale. Tell it time and time again. Kids will love the time you spend with them and, hopefully, it will be a story that they pass down to their own children!
